The Granite Hills JV Eagles football team started off the football sport season in 2008-09 by hosting Mission Bay Buccaneers. The Eagles started on the right foot by coming out on top of the season opener 29 - 27. The first half reflected a strong performance by both the Eagles offense and defense. With respect to the offense, the coaching staff made a significant change in the offensive game strategy this year by putting in more passing plays. This strategy proved successful and led to a strong performance by the offensive team resulting in a 22 - 0 first-half lead over the Buccaneers. Significant passing yardage by the new quarterback Cory Lockman to receivers Gilbert Perez and Nate Huff were the highlights of the first half Eagles scoring. Those in attendance during the first half also witnessed what is believed to be a new passing completion record for the JV team of 85 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles strong defense rose to the occasion and kept the Buccaneers scoreless. The Mission Bay Buccaneers appeared more powerful in the second half. With a stronger passing game, the Buccaneers fought back by scoring 27 points. With only 20 seconds left in the game, the Buccaneers opted to go for a 2 point after-touchdown conversion to tie the game, but a strong defensive play by cornerback Victor Castro prevented the successful pass. Again, the final score was a Granite Hills Eagles win 29 - 27. |
