Granite Hills v Valhalla
November 14th 2008 @ Valhalla

You can draw a lot of parallels between the feud of the Hatfield and the McCoy clans and the modern day feud between the Granite Hills Eagles and the Valhalla Norsemen. Of course, the American folklore of the Hatfield and McCoy feuds were about two warring families of the West Virginia - Kentucky backcountry. However, here in the east county of San Diego, the feuding parallel is a much more friendly and benign feud between the Granite Hills Eagles and Valhalla Norsemen's football teams. Always the intense rivals, the last game of the 2008 - 2009 JV football season, played on the Valhalla field, lived up to the anticipation. As the game went on, you got the feeling that the team that had the last sustained offensive drive would be the winner of this game. When the haze of the smoke from the two blazing offensive football guns finally parted, this football battle went to the Norsemen's liking with a win over the Eagles by the score of 36 - 29.

In the first half of the game, the Eagles got off to a great start and were hoping to establish a winning game rhythm. The Eagles first offensive drive of the game resulted in a nice run by Freddy Halton which led to a 30 yard passing touchdown from Cory Lockman to Gilbert Perez. A Gilbert Perez extra point kick had the Eagles leading 7- 0. For the most part, the Eagles defense kept the Norsemen's running game in check. However, with three minutes left in the first quarter, the Norsemen finally scored, with the following extra point conversion kick blocked by the Eagles Kevin Valenzuela. In the second quarter, a long pass play to Nate Huff set up a 4-yard run by Kevin Valenzuela for an Eagles touchdown. A successful extra point kick and subsequent field goal, both by Gilbert Perez, had the Eagles leading the Norsemen at the end of the half by the score of 17 - 6.

With 7 minutes left in the third quarter, another Cory Lockman - to - Gilbert Perez pass play resulted in a touchdown, adding to the Eagles score. But, the Norsemen blocked the extra point try. Unable to establish their running game in the first half, the Valhalla Norsemen changed their game strategy for the second half. The Norsemen started to charge, offensively, by switching to more of a pass play offense. In the latter portion of the third quarter, a long Norsemen pass play to their right side culminated with a touchdown, which was followed by a successful 2 point conversion. With just 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter, another long pass play to a Valhalla receiver and another successful 2 point conversion led the Norsemen's charge. With 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, several successful Valhalla pass plays saw them drive to the Eagles 1-yard line. A Norsemen one yard run for a touchdown vaulted them to the lead. However, with a heads-up play by the Eagles Jordan Wilson preventing a successful two point conversion, the Valhalla lead was kept in check. An ensuing drive found the Eagles with a 4th down situation. Quarterback Cory Lockman excited the fans with an alert and unexpected 20 yard run to the Norsemen 4-yard line for a first down which kept the Eagles drive alive. A two-yard run for a touchdown by Kevin Valenzuela, but a missed extra 2-point conversion, had the Eagles leading the game, once again. Then, with 25 seconds left in the game, the Eagles fans were on their feet with excitement only looking on in disbelief to see another Valhalla long pass play completion in the Eagles end zone for a touchdown. Adding another successful two-point conversion gave the Valhalla Norsemen the game win by the score of 36 - 29.

Honorable mention includes another fine game by Kevin Valenzuela, playing both offense and defense. Victor Perez demonstrating his versatility in receiving, running, and extra point kicks. All the offensive lineman for enabling the Eagles running backs to "show their stuff", and quarterback protection. The defensive squad is mentioned here for their line play and shutting down the Norsemen's running backs. Finally, the JV Eagles overall record of 7 wins with only 3 losses is a tremendous accomplishment and tribute to all the players for their hard work, dedication, and quality of play during the year. This effort and accomplishments made the coaches and parents very proud to be associated with the team.
