The Granite Hills JV Eagles football team found
their way to the northern part of San Diego County playing their first away game
of the 2008 - 09 football season against the Westview Wolverines. The Eagles
came away from the game outscoring their opponent 27 - 14.
The first half had some challenges to both offense and defense, and the Eagles
found themselves behind by the score of 14 - 7. Some fine play was displayed by
the entire offensive and defense lines but complicated by wide receiver Gilbert
Perez having to sit out suffering from a nagging groin injury and quarterback
Cory Lockman getting sacked hard; and out of the game for almost an entire
quarter. Alternate quarterback Brenden Darcy stepped in and kept the offensive
rhythm going and engineered the only scoring drive for the Eagles in the first
half.
The second half witnessed a stellar performance by the Eagles defensive team.
The defense held the Wolverines scoreless in the second half contributing to the
confidence of the offense. Two passing touchdowns by returning quarterback Cory
Lockman both to D'Anthony Young and one running play by Kevin Valenzuela
resulted in the Eagles scoring 20 points.
Some additional noteworthy player and
game highlights are: (1) Nate Huff who seemed to be making plays all
over the field and sustaining some hard hits dished out by the
Wolverines defense, and (2) Jorge Bruno who, without hesitation, took
over the kicking duties in the place of the injured Gilbert Perez. The
offense piled up 318 total yards while the defense held the Wolverines
to only -5 yards in the second half.
Again, the final score was a Granite Hills Eagles win 27 - 14
