Granite Hills v Grossmont
October 10 2008 @ Home

After a week off, the Granite Hills JV Eagles football team hosted the Grossmont Foothillers on the Eagles home field. The Eagles allowed the Foothillers to get a substantial lead in the game which was difficult to overcome and resulted in the Eagles first loss of the season 24 -19.

The first half started favorably for the Eagles with their fans observing a successful touchdown pass play from Cory Lockman to Gilbert Perez and an early 7 - 0 lead. However, as the first half continued on, strong Foothiller offensive line play began to overtake the Eagles; opening holes for Foothiller running backs to gobble up significant yardage per play. Because of the many successful Foothiller running plays, the time of possession tilted largely in favor of the Foothillers which kept the Eagles offense off the field for a large portion of the 2nd quarter. A Foothiller field goal and a pass play for a touchdown resulted in the half ending with the Grossmont Foothillers taking the lead 10 -7.

The second half saw the Grossmont Foothillers offensive line continuing to dominate the game. Foothiller time-clock-eating running plays continued to keep the Eagles offense off the field while successfully scoring two more touchdowns of their own. With only about 4 minutes left in the game, the Eagles offensive machine began to spark. A well engineered offensive possession excited the fans and culminated in a 3-yard running touchdown by Cory Lockman. In the ensuing kickoff, the excited fans were thrilled to witness a successful Eagles onside kick which gave the ball back to the Eagles and led to a quick running touchdown by Kevin Valenzuela. With only 15 seconds left in the game, the fans were on their feet as the Eagles attempted a winning touchdown pass play to Nate Huff, but came up just short with the Foothillers intercepting the pass. As time ran out, the hopeful home fans unfortunately saw the scoreboard register a Grossmont Foothiller win by the score of 24 - 19.

The Eagles defensive line, although largely overpowered by the Foothiller offensive line players throughout the game, never gave up and successfully prevented the Foothillers from gaining 1st down yardage at critical times. The Eagles offensive line, although struggling to get game time, excelled in providing substantial pass protection for their quarterback and blocking for their running backs.

Notable mention includes defensive players Jorge Bruno and Victor Castro for their contribution in preventing many successful Foothiller 1st down attempts. To illustrate the minimal offensive play time, the Eagles offensive only had 14 snaps of the football through the first 3 quarters of the game and just 40 snaps total, (most occurring during the last 10 minutes of play). Quarterback Cory Lockman successfully threw for 112 total passing yards, with one passing and one running touchdown.
