The Granite Hills JV Eagles football team played the sixth game of the season by hosting the Mount Miguel Matadors on the Eagles home field. The Eagles finished the game continuing to lead the Division 1 South Grossmont league with a win over the Matadors by the score of 24 - 20. Strong Eagles offensive and defensive plays were the highlights of the first half. For the offense, two passing touchdowns, one to Nate Huff and the other to Gilbert Perez, and a Gilbert Perez field goal summed up the 17 points scored by the Eagles. The defense demonstrated alert play and held the Matador scoring drives in check with a Danny Neff interception, a Jordan Wilson interception and a fumble recovery by Brandon Winzer. With the Eagles giving up only one Matador touchdown, the half ended with the Eagles leading 17 - 7. The second half saw more fine defensive plays by the Eagles. Jordan Wilson intercepted another Matador pass and fumble recoveries, one by Sam Bryan and another by Victor Castro, kept the Matadors offensive drives to a minimum. The Eagles offensive strategy leaned toward more passing plays for a large portion of the half. However, the Eagles offensive line were continually challenged by the strong Matador defensive back surge against most Eagle pass plays. With a strong Matador pass play rush, the Eagles were unable to succeed with many key pass play completions and led to a quarterback fumble for a Matador touchdown. The fans apprehensively saw the Eagles quarterback struggling with having minimal time to set up for passing plays, tackled to the ground after almost all pass play attempts, and a pass being intercepted. In the 4th quarter, the Eagles defensive team rose to the occasion and overcame these offensive challenges. Kevin Valenzuela tackled the Matador running back in the end zone causing a fumble recovery by Victor Castro for an Eagles touchdown. A last minute long pass play by the Matadors for a touchdown was not enough to prevent an Eagles win with a score of 24 - 20 and their 5th victory of the season. Notable mention includes Kevin Valenzuela for many strong offensive runs and defensive plays. Free Safety Jordan Wilson with two interceptions. Danny Neff for a key interception, and linebacker Brandon Winzer for strong defensive plays causing two Matador fumbles. And lastly, to Michael Walsh for his usual strong and consistent defensive line play.
