Granite Hills v Steele Canyon
October 24 2008 @ Steele Canyon
written by Beth Doblado with help on details from #35 Tyler Kidder.

The Granite Hills Eagles JV Team arrived at Steele Canyon High School Friday Night October 25, 2008 primed and ready to win this football game. Eagles Defense started the show by shutting down the Steele Canyon Cougars on their first drive. With less than 4 minutes left in the first quarter, Eagles Offense sent a long pass to receiver #80 NATE HUFF and a touchdown pass to #36 GILBERT PEREZ. The extra point was good and Granite Hills led 7-0.

Defense continued to deny Cougars yardage the entire game, getting on and off the field quickly so Offense could do their work. The Offensive line and backs protected Quarterback #13 CORY LOCKMAN, giving him plenty to time to plan his passes. LOCKMAN, in shotgun and throwing for a total of 300 yards, proved that his arm is a dangerous weapon- passing the ball with speed, power and accuracy all night. LOCKMAN moved the Offense quickly down the field and connected another huge pass to HUFF, this time in the end zone. Eagle fans went wild, only to be disappointed as the referees brought the ball back for a call against Steele Canyon.  First Quarter ended Eagles 7- Steele Canyon 0.

Second Quarter Steele Canyon’s #35 Brandon Watson ran through the middle of Eagles Defense for a Touchdown. Granite Hills responded with a series of passes by LOCKMAN to PEREZ which brought Eagles near the end zone, but Cougars stopped them short one yard before first down and Eagles were forced to turn the ball over. Cougars moved the ball back down the field and you could hear a pin drop in the Visitor stands as Steele Canyon kicked a field goal seconds before halftime.

Second half started with a big carry down the field by #41 KEVIN VALENZUELA for the Eagles. Then LOCKMAN found #10 JOE CRESTIK’s hands as they reached up above a defender in the back corner of the end zone for an amazing How did he do that catch. With the extra point good Eagles were ahead again 10-14.

With 1 minute left in 3rd quarter Steele Canyon was in a tough spot- 4th down and 4 yards to go and out of field goal range. They decided to go for it, however Eagle’s #54 JOHN SHOEMAKER forced the fumble and #79 CHRISTIAN LONGBRAKE recovered possession for Granite Hills.

4th quarter both defenses battled hard to stop either team from scoring. The Eagles with 3 minutes left in the game were on a 4th down with 3 yards to go. LOCKMAN ran the ball himself up the field for a 16 yard gain. This put the Eagles in Field Goal range, and PEREZ’s attempt was good, pulling the Eagles safely ahead to 17-10.

The game ended with Eagles defense once again shutting down the Cougar Offense. #35 TYLER KIDDER broke through to knock the ball out of the quarterback’s hand and almost recover the ball for the Eagles. The next play LONGBRAKE finished the job with an amazing sack.

Final Score: 17-10 Granite Hills which puts Granite Hills JV in 1st place in their League, tied with Helix Highlanders.
